A year ago I could buy a fuel pump for my wifes 1981 chev for $15-20 and now its $45. Same type of thing with 8N parts. Head gasket 6 months ago was $15 and now its $25 and a full set is $47 and 6 months ago it was $25. Why in the world did the price double or almost double in less then a year??
Just a rant but hey it doesn't seem right

Parts prices are going crazy. Many have doubled and tripled in the past 2-3 years.Inflation is much higher than what the government is reporting.

Every year at work I get a 3% raise and its promptly eaten up by increased healthcare costs. My buying power is less and less every year.

This is looking alot like the late 1970's and we know what happened in the early 1980's.

The government can say that there is little or no inflation the last couple of years, but they sure can't make me believe it! With the increases in the prices of almost all fuels that we have had, almost everything else has also gone up. Maybe not as fast or as much, but most things cost a lot more than they did a few years ago.

Our dollars just do not have the buying power that they once did. That is INFLATION.

Last couple of years we were cheering or cursing the price increases in scrap metal. China was/is buying up record amounts of the stuff. Now we are reaping the rewards as the goods this went into are going up. Add to that the increases in freight and transportation, and the increases in raw materials. Subtract from that the incredible shrinking dollar and what we have is a tremendous price squeeze.

Sorta reminds me of the early 70's.

Lets see, energy price spikes
Record high commodoty prices
Soaring land values
Record high gold prices

Then double digit inflation

Then double digit interest rates

Then the collapse

30 years later it repeats.

Everything for a tractor is going up because of the price of steel, and that is China's fault, they are building buildings over there as fast as the cranes can be erected. Some structural shapes have gone up over 300% in the last 3 years.

Canadian dollar almost 1.03 U.S. The U.S. dollar got taken out behind the woodshed again today losing another .51 ending at 77.5 on the dollar index. This index ( which is a measurement taken from a basket of international currencies) was at an all time high about five years ago hitting over 120. Meanwhile ALL and I mean ALL currencies are inflating like no tomorrow. Peoples savings are being destroyed. You've acknowledged all that with these complaints of higher prices. So,what to do?

Yep, heard a couple weeks ago the U.S. dollar had gone to parity with the Canadian. I was kind of surprised the prices with the newly devalued dollar didn't show up immediately, such as a big jump in gas prices. I also heard that retail stores are holding back price increases until next year for fear it will be a bad Christmas season for sales. Makes you wonder where we're headed.

Hey fellas! I agree that fuel prices kind of set a standard but guess what that $8.00 wheat and $16.00 durum is doing. They can't let us farmers get by without paying for those high prices. If you are old enough to remember in 1974 what happened. We ordered a new 1066 IHC in June-said we couldn't get it until late fall. The original price was around $18,500 and when we got it in Dec, the price $23,400 and those prices have never came back down.

Here is my take and i agree its all out of order. Fuel prices affect everything (The gas pump is 50% of whats wrong today.) The dollar is weak last i knew it is almost equal to the canadian dollar (I remember when one us was 2 canadian) Taxes, enviomental laws and osha standards add to the bottom line. The intrest rates/credit and (housing issues) are not helping any Medical and retirement issues are also kicking in big time. There is some thought that if it continues it will be once again possible to manufacture in the us again. Global competition for some materials (supply demAND) is also driving up prices.

But current laws pretty much have been the same as 6 months ago or even 6 years ago for that matter. Gas can't count for that kind of price change. It doesn't add up. Wages haven't changed much either. More and more retirement plans are being eliminated every year. Interest rates are very low. Explain how housing drives the cost of a fuel pump up double in six months. Government programs are on our future as in we aren't paying for them now we are building debt. The dollar to me is the biggest reason alone. Will eventually be good for us by bringing back manufacturing here if it last long enough and if we can last long enough.

Well go see what a denist cost. Just got some quotes on 12 porcilin crowns or veneers, 6 top, 6 bottom, all fronts. Cash upfront =

$33500
or $19900 with my lower jaw at my knees
or $20000 or just about what a small car cost he said while looking at his $100,000 Rolex

Lowest is $610 tooth or $7320 plus $108 exam unless I want to take her too Mexico for $300/tooth, free exam

How can pulling all the teeth to ware dentures ($5000/USD) be cheaper than capping 12 theeth???

Unbeliveable!!!

Yes, I feel your pain. My teeth were wearing out and all of the old fillings were just about shot. Dentist wanted me to cap everything. The cost $24K. Required a lot of soul searching, because I tend to be thrifty and it is hard to understand why it is so expensive. Could buy a lot of toys for that kind of money. Finally decided to do it and the results look fantastic. Hopefully as time passes the "sting" from the exorbitant cost will fade. Tomorrow will drop another $4K for Lasik eye surgery. For the last 15 years the better half has been after me to get rid of glasses and I'm not going to wear contacts. Been there and done that 30 years ago. This is the first time I've had enough medical to be tax deductable, so might as well make her happy and also let Uncle Sam pick up a little of the tab.

Ohh and I forgot the best part:

Even tho we have the FDA inspections/rules/regulations, 99% of the procilin comes from China that contains lead and the Dentist/lab has no control over.

The reason is the explosive growth of China and the consumption of raw materials to suport it.

Go buy a fuel pump for a new car ! They are in the tank and call them modules. you have to get the whole sender and all for about $300-$400

At least with car parts they are raising the prices to make up for what they aren't getting in new car sales. GM had to raise theirs again to cover the strike costs.

What costs? We were on strike for just over 1 day, and they sure didn't pay us for it. We haven't worked any ot to make up for lost production, either. Financially, it was a non event fo GM.

The value of the US Dollar is dropping like a rock.Things aren't that much higher its just that since you're paying for it in US Dollars you have to have more of them to make up the value they have lost against other curriencies.
And since most parts are made outside the US these days the trend will continue.

Well, that is not entirely true. My wages haven't gone up that much. Seems like every year it just gets harder and harder to make ends meet. You hear of big corporate CEO's getting these big bonuses for the numbers they hit, but who is making it all happen? Very rarely do you see a CEO in jeans and a work shirt, and god forbid they get dirty. Sit back, shout orders and collect a big check, wouldn't that be the life? Sorry, I had some built up frustration as well.

Hi Rich, it ain't just parts. Groceries, cigs, ammunition, fuel, clothing, oil, lumber, and just about everything has gone up quite a bit. Last year I bought a 50 pound box of 20 penny common nails for 19 dollars. Got a box at the same place last week was an even 30.

It seems everyone is using fuel as an excuse to raise prices. Fuel is part of the reason but I think greed is the biggest problem. Cattle prices have pretty much stayed the same for several years but fuel, fertilizer, parts and just about everything else has skyrocketed. If you go to the emplement dealer and try to get a price on something they will add a fuel and steel surcharge. I haven't seen it this tough in over 25 years.

I had an electrician friend over to do some work for me, I had just returned from town after filling my truck full of diesel and the big tank in the back with gasoline, and I was on a rant! Jess is retired and has been on some huge jobs in Alaska and over seas, so he has been around. When I finished my rant, I said that you would think our gov. would get a handle on this. Jess picked up a small piece of wire and held it for an illustration and replied,"This wire has raised in price 300% in the past year, whether it was copper, or petrolium for the insulation or maybe freight, but their is a reason for the increase. Do you know what else has gone up 300%..... .the taxes and their is not a penny of investment in them!" after thinking over his statement it sure put it in perspective for me. sorry for the length, just thought it needed told.
