First you need to find out what model you have so you can get the right wiring diagram.
Then, if it has a voltage regulator, determine if it is a positive or negative ground regulator. The generator can work either way, as can some voltage regulators, but not all of them. Sometimes it is stamped on the bottom of the voltage regulator.
If it is 6 volt, it was most likely positive ground from the factory, but over 50 or 60 years, somebody could have changed things around.
About that smoke. Was it a lot of smoke, or just a spark when you connected it to the battery? If it is alot of smoke, you need to go through the wiring and look for shorts, grounds, and pinched wires.
