I have an old International Farmall Tractor I am working on refurbishing. I am currently working on the electrical system.

First of all, I have had the starter and the generator repaired on the tractor in the last two weeks. Both have been rebuilt. I am curious is there anyway of knowing exactly how to hook up the battery and terminals to the 6 volt battery. I wanted to make sure that all of this was done correctly.

Also, when I hooked up my battery a little bit of smoke was coming off the battery terminal? Is this normal? Could there be a problem in the way I have hooked the system back up. I look forward to hearing everyones comments. If any additional information is needed to help, please feel free to comment back. THANKS A MILLION!

Well with out knowing the model you have we can only make a good guess as to how it should be hooked up. But since you said 6 volts it most likely should be + ground. But more info is needed to be able to help you much

First you need to find out what model you have so you can get the right wiring diagram.

Then, if it has a voltage regulator, determine if it is a positive or negative ground regulator. The generator can work either way, as can some voltage regulators, but not all of them. Sometimes it is stamped on the bottom of the voltage regulator.

If it is 6 volt, it was most likely positive ground from the factory, but over 50 or 60 years, somebody could have changed things around.

About that smoke. Was it a lot of smoke, or just a spark when you connected it to the battery? If it is alot of smoke, you need to go through the wiring and look for shorts, grounds, and pinched wires.

I would locate my model and serial number, and do a web search for Binder Books.Binder reproduces IH/Farmall Original owners/parts and service manuals-typically most owners manuals will have a diagram of the complete wiring harness and a indication if the unit is positive or negative ground.
Good Luck
