First thing to ask, what size are your current battery cables? If they are 4 gauge or less (like those found on a 12volt system) then going to a 8 volt battery is just a band aid. You'll have more power to crank with, but whats the point? You still haven't remedied the small cable and won't be making the most of that 8 volt either.
If you don't have 0 guage cables already installed on the 6 volt battery, try that first and see how well it cranks. If your still not happy then go with the 8 volt... and crank up the regulator.
