I put an 8 volt in my WD45 about a year ago with no other changes. Improvement is 100%. Turns over much faster, starts quicker, more reserve. Would do it again without hesitation.

First thing to ask, what size are your current battery cables? If they are 4 gauge or less (like those found on a 12volt system) then going to a 8 volt battery is just a band aid. You'll have more power to crank with, but whats the point? You still haven't remedied the small cable and won't be making the most of that 8 volt either.

If you don't have 0 guage cables already installed on the 6 volt battery, try that first and see how well it cranks. If your still not happy then go with the 8 volt... and crank up the regulator.

people buy 8 volt batteries as an excuse not to pull out the battery cables and put new ones in. If your 6 volt charging system is in great working order, 6 volt batteries will last forever.

The folks on the Ford N board have a mantra- "keep em clean, bright and tight" - meaning all the electrical connections.
An 8 volt battery is looked upon there as just a band aid for other electrical problems.
A well maintained 6 volt system will easily start your crawlerr in all but the coldest temperatures.
Either fix the 6 volt you have or go to 12 V.
But skip the 8V.

Yes. just responded to this on another forum. You can replace 6 v with 8v. The only thing you have to do is tweek the regulator. the 6v. gen will put out plenty of volts but the reg needs to be tweeked to alow it to do so. I did it in the 49 GMC. Brighter lites and fast starting. No problems at all in 5 yrs.

Forget the 8 volt battery. Convert to 12 volts. You will never regert it. Armand

Used to be a parts manager at a Case-IH. No problem with the 6 to 8 replacement, but need remember the generator is only charging 6v. Get ahold of a volt meter and reset the voltage regulator. Can't remember the exact numbers, but think 6v was charging around 7.2v 1500rpm. Think would need around 10.5 to 12 v to keep the 8 v up. Why stay on 6 and not 12 and do an alternator conversion?
