It isn't always just the owner. In 1963 my father had a brand new JD 1010 crawler tractor. He took it in to the dealer for its maybe 100 hour service, I can't remember exactly. They drained the direction reverser, changed the filter element and then started to pour the fluid back into it. He stopped them and asked what they thought they were doing. "Saving you some money". He said "Well you can drain that "stuff" right back out and put in new oil, the manual says change it, and that's what I want you to do." I still have the tractor, by the way, and the reverser has only been opened up once since it was new.
