Hey Old. It's best to have some serious backing under the tile. Something that won't give and break the tiles later. It's also best to use mixed mortar with the synthetic additives for a lifetime adhesion. Also, you don't have to lay the tile from the center, just lay it out from the center to make sure you have even pieces of tile on all sides.
