My understanding is that collectables tend to keep up with inflation. Some things will be hot and gain value, others will stay put or loose value. As a catagory it's a wash. As a general rule, anything sold as a collectable will not keep up with inflation.
If almost nobody kept it, it may become valuable. That is why toy collectors want original boxes.
But unless you can predict what will be desired by collectors in 10, 20, or 30 years any collectable is a crap shoot.
