On our 6.9 & 7.3 as the sensors go bad I take a 12 to 6 volt reducer and install a starter button under the dash to put the glowplugs on manual. You dont have to bypass or cut any wires, just piggy back the new manual wire onto any glowplug wire and hook it up. I have found that if I hold the button for 15 seconds on real cold mornings they crank better. If I get the supply from the fusebox I don't have to listen to silly beepers from the key being on while I wait.
