Great information in the earlier posts. I've had 4 cyl and 8 cyl diesels with Glow Plugs. If just one goes bad you notice it by hard starting. They are usually controlled by an engine temp. sensor. when starting a Cold engine about 10 seconds is the time needed to warm things up; A warm engine 2-6 seconds. If the sensor fails and leaves them on much longer- all glow plugs will be burnt out. Ford's 6.9 diesel drove me to a mental break down only after finacial ruin with its sensor and glow plug replacements I was paying $10 /plug and $120 for the sensor.
