I was nearly court martialed for disobeying a direct order from a bird colonel at Ft Knox, Ky. I was leading a platoon of 3 M-551 Sheridan tanks to the rear for Q-service and stopped at the Salt River to wait on the ferry. The Colonel and his driver came along and he wanted to see if a Sheridan really would float. They will, but only after the float kit is installed. We didn't have any. He ordrered me to float all 3 tanks across the river. I told him to take flying leap. As luck had it my Colonel showed up and took care of things. I wanted to shoot that Colonel, but didn't have any ammo.
