You hit the nail on the head; its outrageous. I needed a new gas tank fuel level sensor float for my Chevrolet flatbed. The dealer said it is not available, but they could sell me an entire fuel level assembly which includes the float, float arm, sensor and mounting attachment for about $170.00. I tried to explain to them that somewhere in a factory, someone is taking the brass floats from a box and snapping them onto the float assembly, so why can't I just get a float. They said it was impossible. I phone Chevrolet headquarters; they would not make an exception - it was all the parts or none! I found a plactic float from a junk Nissan and it fit right in.
