Here in the southwest, they will use one or two salt water injection wells to get rid of the salt water that is pumped with the oil. as they pump the salt water into the injection wells, forces more oil to the other wells pumping in area. How close they are together depends on the oil producing sands and the depth. A long time ago the oil companies would dump the salt watere on roads to keep dust down. That caused all kinds of problems for crops and livestock, so that is against law now.
