it would be hard to make 30 acres pay all year. horse hay is always in demand and spring vegetable crops like pick your own operations, specialized custom calf raising/butchering, maybe some sort of home based business like custom tractor work, welding, mechanic services, cut and sell firewood, christmas trees, build fences...etc. it's just getting harder and harder to make ends meet with taxes and insurance and modern lifestyles.
