O.T. 6.5 DIESEL HELP-Calling jdmaris or others too!

Sorry for the OT post but we're on a family vacation away from home base and our '95 6.5 TD has a loud knocking sound that I've narrowed down to the vacuum pump. I have a new one onboard and also a new pulley. My question to anyone having R&R'd one of these--is this a fairly straightforward job? It looks like the mounting bolts run through the AC compressor bracket and into the tapped holes of the pump. The bolts come in from the rear of the bracket so it may be a little tight as far as bolt head access. I found one forum where it stated I needed a puller to remove the pulley. I will need the center bolt off the old one and what looks like a spacer ring, but will use a new pulley. If anyone has any tips or advice I'd be grateful. I'm debating doing this "in the parking lot" with limited tools onboard. Also, while climbing grades in the mountains, we get an SES light only in the last part of the climb. I suspect this is a wastegate issue due to no or little vacuum. Last question, if I leave it alone and try to limp home (8 hour run) what's the odds off the vacuum pump disintegrating and leaving us on the side of the road? Thanks for any advice you could offer.
