The big thing is what you cut with it and how often. If grass and weeds, you can keep the blades sharp with a small angle grinder after lifting and propping it up to get at the blades to sharpen in place. If you use it all the time, then once or twice a season, other wise if you only use it occasionally in relatively small and rock-free fields each time, then a sharpening might go several seasons. If it is brush you are cutting you want it a little dull, that way it "brooms" the brush so that the cut stumps look broom like and are less likely to pop tires than the sharp stubs left when cutting with a sharp brush hog.
