How often should the blade on this thing be sharpened? My grandpa bought it back in the 70s, and its the original blade and has never been sharpened... And methinks that it needs it, and probably has needed it for a good many years now.

When you get ready to remove the blades first thing is are the threads right or left hand. Knew a guy who did this from place to place and said that was the biggest problem.

The big thing is what you cut with it and how often. If grass and weeds, you can keep the blades sharp with a small angle grinder after lifting and propping it up to get at the blades to sharpen in place. If you use it all the time, then once or twice a season, other wise if you only use it occasionally in relatively small and rock-free fields each time, then a sharpening might go several seasons. If it is brush you are cutting you want it a little dull, that way it "brooms" the brush so that the cut stumps look broom like and are less likely to pop tires than the sharp stubs left when cutting with a sharp brush hog.

I have a pull behind I converted the lift to hydraulic. sure makes it easier to use.
I put the frame up as high as I can then block it with large flat blocks 4X12s Then its safe to crawl under and use an angle grinder to sharpen it. Walt PS don't trust chains they come loose and or break.

Buy another set of blades, replace and sharpen old ones and store ready for replacement. Remove blades to sharpen once per year. Examine closely for cracks. If OK then sharpen them the same amount, to keep close to balance. Use new lock nuts when replacing. Do not weld, torch, or repair blades. You do not want to see what happens when a blade comes apart. Tom

may just be time to replace them if not we put an edge on with the torch they do not have to be as sharp as the lawn mower blades generally and will dull that super sharp edge pretty fast.

Depends on how nuch you use it. I have a 5' kingkutter which iI use about 50 hours a year and I sharpen it once a year . Is a lot easer on tractor to mow with sharp blades & fields look better to if you cut them not beat the grass down . I mow a field for a guy I used to work with before I retired he used to someone else to mow the guy just put tractor in high and overan the blades I mow in 5th gear and it looks good when I finish .

Well, it gets probably about 20 hours of use a year... But still, I'd say its long overdue for some kind of sharpening. Although can I sharpen the blades myself? I imagine they're far too bulky to do with a bench grinder and then finish with a hand file like I do the regular lawn mower blades...

Well if its a brush hog type would you believe I never sharpen the ones on mine. I have so many rocks around here its not worth it to sharpen them. Now if you do sharpen them about the best way is with an angle grinder and some way to flip it over or hang it up. DON'T lift it on the 3 point and crawl under it or it might be the last thing you ever do.

Well, it's not a mounted mower, it's a two wheel pull behind model. But to get the blade out, I'd need some sort of ingenious way to get under it and block it up. Not really a good and safe way to do it though, when I think about it.

I assume the blade(s) just bolt on the underside of the mower with giant lock nuts, similar to a regular lawn mower?

In that case the best way would be a big tree a chain and a com-a-long. Hoist it up so its standing up and then you can work on it and be safe. Seen to many things fall off of blocks etc. and have even spent time in the hospital because of something falling on me. I learned to work safe or not at all.
