I wonder one thing about this idea, and thats in the case of when you have an existing insulated attic. If you nail/staple/whatever this foil or foam to your rafters, and your roof is vented with the tin vents and not the ridge vent, will this not seal off the majority of the roof from having the cross-flow ventilation (up soffit, out vents in peak) that it was designed to have? Seems to me that unless you have the continuous ridge vent this will bake the shingles far from the tin vents, but the ones close will be nice and cool...Call me old fashioned, but I think you're better off investing in some good old fiberglass, and the baffles as suggested earlier. Just my 2 cents tho FWIW
