I was at a county fair last Sun. & the power company had a booth & was pushing some ideas for insulation. Has anyone used the 2 sided alum faced rolls of 1/2 foam board tacked to the underside of the rafters in your home? Their claim was to keep the heat from penetrating your attic area in the summer & to keep the heat from escaping yor attic in the winter .They said to run it within a foot of your peak on each side to let the heat escape out the ridge vent.Would this have any effect on your shingles? Earl

I wonder one thing about this idea, and thats in the case of when you have an existing insulated attic. If you nail/staple/whatever this foil or foam to your rafters, and your roof is vented with the tin vents and not the ridge vent, will this not seal off the majority of the roof from having the cross-flow ventilation (up soffit, out vents in peak) that it was designed to have? Seems to me that unless you have the continuous ridge vent this will bake the shingles far from the tin vents, but the ones close will be nice and cool...Call me old fashioned, but I think you're better off investing in some good old fiberglass, and the baffles as suggested earlier. Just my 2 cents tho FWIW

I used the 48" rolls of perforated foil that was maybe 10mil thick when I built my shop and it made a huge difference in the amount of heat that was reflected back from the steel walls.

Very little effect on shingles since the warm air is going out the ridgevent. You really should have air going in at the base to carry warm air out the top to the ridgevent. It would function like a flu. This is a tough project to do with roof trusses.

We ideally vent with ridge vent the entire length of the peak, with vented soffit down under the eaves. As long as the path from the bottom to the top doesn't get blocked, it will draft enough to keep moisture down. We sometimes install foam baffles to retain the insulation from the roof plywood.

I used it in a new 30 x40 shop although it is steel roof and siding. Cool it good with a 12000 btu A/C. really like it
