First thing i would be checking is the fuel filter then have the pump pressure checked if it is a late 98 then you had best be changing the lift pump before ya have to buy the injection pump and i am leaning more to the lift pump then the filter . There is and electric fuel pump before the injection pump that goes bad on them and will cause the main pump to go . One should have a fuel pressure agauge or a warning lite to montour the fuel pressure on these .
