a buddy of myns 98 dodge cummins recently after being in the barn all winter got out to pull a couple of tractor on a trailer down the road nothing real heavy it seemed to be lacking power and the normal black soot out of the exhaust wasnt there any suggestions it was ket in a heated barn all winter it does fine under regalur driving

Is the truck a 98 or 98.5 98's are 12 valve engines, 98.5 are the 24 valve engine where the problematic lift pump comes into play. Start simple fuel filter turbo hoses etc. Go to turbodieselregistry.com ALOT of good knowledge there it's all dodge/cummins stuff.

First thing i would be checking is the fuel filter then have the pump pressure checked if it is a late 98 then you had best be changing the lift pump before ya have to buy the injection pump and i am leaning more to the lift pump then the filter . There is and electric fuel pump before the injection pump that goes bad on them and will cause the main pump to go . One should have a fuel pressure agauge or a warning lite to montour the fuel pressure on these .

Check the rubber hoses on the turbo/intercooler plumbing.

Mice like them. Leak = no boost = injection pump holds back on the fuel.

I too would start by changing the fuel filter, amazing what can settle out over time. When changing the filter, you'll know if the lift pump is okay, if it is going, it will take forever to refill the fuel filter cannister.

Probably need to reprogram the APPS. Disconnect batteries for about 1/2 hour to let all capacitors discharge. Reconnect batteries then turn key on to run position, but not start, SLOWLY push the accelerator pedal to the floor and slowly let it back up. Then turn key off before starting. This resets the vehicle computer so that throttle position sensor and fuel pump control match... Gene

You need to check your fuel filter and check the pressure from the transfer pump. The transfer pumps go out fairly often, and if run long enough it damages a diaphagm in the main pump and then you have trouble. There are a couple good websites that cover this, try bluechipdiesel.com.
