Haven't really found the problem with beans. Tried earlier planting, fungicide, blanket micro-nutrients, liquid fertilizer (non-salt) and always innoculated. They can look great and still be very disappointing. Never had an aphid, red spider mite or cyst nematode problem. Have seen some SDS. The general "buzz" from the local grapevine, is that few in this area typically reach 60 bu/acre. Some with very limited success, have used three preventative fungicide and insecticide applications. I've never tried but probably should do tissue samples. On the other hand, good corn is not always a given. If you have a droughty year, it can be darn poor. However beans are mediocre regardless whether it rains or not, and corn hasn't received the yield boosting attention we have given beans. In contrast, I have been able to grow very good wheat regardless of the weather. If in the next month or so, Nov 08 beans go above $10, I'll likely sell 30-40% on a hedge-to-arrive contract and thereby be forced to give them a try again next year.
