Some of those old M-F tractors had a "ground drive" position on the PTO lever. When in ground drive the PTO speed was relative to the ground speed of the tractor, and did not matter how fast the engine was running. Shifting to a higher gear increased the PTO speed, shifting down slowed the PTO. Also shifting to reverse also reversed the direction of the PTO, and was handy for unplugging equipment like hay crimper. That is probaly what happened when the lever was shifted opposite the normal direction. Easy to find out if that is the problem, just back up and watch the PTO shaft. Maybe that is it? Good luck, Paul
