I was trying to turn the blades on my mower to sharpen them, attached my Mf 231, and they would not turn, I thought something happened to the gear box. What I finally found was the PTO lever was pushed to the foreward position, probably by my granddaughter the previous day as she was sitting on it. I knew it went foreward, but never knew why. I guess it is for safety. Now I know. Stan

yep just like paul said it is for the ground speed PTO. Some Massey equipment needed that. Like the old 3 point hitch hay rake i used yesterday.

37 Chief,
I hear where you're coming from. I can't seem to find the manual for my 51 Ford 8n (besides the one I downloaded), or for the I.H. 5' brush hog from the mid-50's attached to it.

VERY dangerous place to be us under a rotary mower attatched to a tractor for whick the owner has not read the Operator Manual. Kids jump on tractors all the time and "play" with the levers, even when the owner is under the mower deck. Blades need to come off for proper inspection, sharpening, and balancing. Also, always used new lock-nuts when changing blades, as they are intended for one time use. Rotary cutters are very dangerous at best, even when doing all maintenance properly. A loose blade at 540 PTO is something you never want to see. Tom

I agree with you about mowers being dangerous. My mower is on my trailer when I sharpen the blades. I block it up, and only my hands are under it. stan

Some of those old M-F tractors had a "ground drive" position on the PTO lever. When in ground drive the PTO speed was relative to the ground speed of the tractor, and did not matter how fast the engine was running. Shifting to a higher gear increased the PTO speed, shifting down slowed the PTO. Also shifting to reverse also reversed the direction of the PTO, and was handy for unplugging equipment like hay crimper. That is probaly what happened when the lever was shifted opposite the normal direction. Easy to find out if that is the problem, just back up and watch the PTO shaft. Maybe that is it?
Good luck,
Paul

Always wondered why manufactures sent a wad of paper along with their product that's called an operator's manual?

I have never bought a new tractor, and probably never will, to have the opportunity to receive all that good info. I never wanted to know what the foreward position was for as I didn't feel there was a need to know it. If I really wanted to know I would have looked at my oweners manual I bought on EBAY. Stan
