Jean Pierre -- Today is Memorial Day (last Monday of May), which was originally called Decoration Day -- the day to decorate the graves of soldiers lost in the Civil War. After World War I, it was changed officially as a day to honor those from all wars. At least in my part of the country (New England) it is by far the most publicly celebrated holiday, with nearly every town having at least a humble parade of the town's youth and local veterans and usually other organizations like the volunteer fire department. Honor Guards will visit and say words of rememberance at outlying monuments and cemeteries not near the parade route. Other holidays, notably the 4th of July, will have larger celebrations thrown but not nearly as many communities will hold such events. While the sentiments, rightfully, are mixed often on the two holidays Veterans Day (11 November, remembering the end of World War I) is the holiday to remember the service of those who served and are still alive.
