I'm a Korean (NOT WAR) policing action vet and I think weve got the least of everything. Everything we got was left over from WW11 including our c-rations. Powered eggs from 1941-didn't taste too bad after they were doctored up alittle. Agood Memorial Day to everyone.

Thank you! 19K M1 Tanker. Spent a fair amount of time in Honduras and El Salvador during the Contra War days. My hat is off to those who served in WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, and all the Gulf Conflicts. Thoughts and prayers are with those on the sharp end of the stick right now.

Thank you for remembering us.
1958 Calif. National Guard (28156937)
Navy 1958 to 1962 (Laos action Expeditionary medal) (5034643)
1968 to 1972 naval reserve.
12 years total in reserves and regulars.

1961 5 days of "Hell" off Subic Bay Philippines on LSD-22 Fort Marion fighting 200 MPH winds and seas crashing over bridge 80 ft. above water line. Almost lost it all that time.
The sea can be something else when a big storm comes up.

I was alway proud of my service even when others were not.
My 3 Uncles were Navy and Merchant Marine during WW-II I'm proud of them also.
Had a gt. uncle who was a Doctor on the Great White Fleet 1910.

I also want to add my thanks, most younger people today do not realize what was sacrificed to live the way we do today. You vets are a different and better breed than most of us.

Jean Pierre --

Today is Memorial Day (last Monday of May), which was originally called Decoration Day -- the day to decorate the graves of soldiers lost in the Civil War. After World War I, it was changed officially as a day to honor those from all wars.

At least in my part of the country (New England) it is by far the most publicly celebrated holiday, with nearly every town having at least a humble parade of the town's youth and local veterans and usually other organizations like the volunteer fire department. Honor Guards will visit and say words of rememberance at outlying monuments and cemeteries not near the parade route. Other holidays, notably the 4th of July, will have larger celebrations thrown but not nearly as many communities will hold such events.

While the sentiments, rightfully, are mixed often on the two holidays Veterans Day (11 November, remembering the end of World War I) is the holiday to remember the service of those who served and are still alive.

Well, Jean Pierre, I can't speak for other folks, but for me, it's a day to remember all those young men and women that have made (and are making) sacrifices to keep the United States strong and free. Thanks to them, I didn't have to learn to speak German or Russian, I can go anywhere in this great country I darn please without asking anyone's permission, and if I think one or more of our leaders or politicians is wrong about something, I can say so and try to do something about it, without fear of reprisal.

It's pretty easy to take that sort of thing for granted when you've lived that way all your life, so today I make an extra effort to be aware of it and thankful for it.

Thanks to ALL vets. The thing that bothers me the most is that the Vietnam vets never got 1/10th the recognition that everyone else gets. To me EVERYONE that has served deserves recognition. Keep up all the great work all military personel.

I was in the 90th. Division, in France, in 1944! Was assigned to my unit: B Company, 357th. Infantry Regiment, approximately July 16-17, 1944. Saw action from the hedgerow country up to Mazieres-le-Metz! Took part in the liberation of Mayenne, Le Mans, The Falaise Gap action, and walked across much of that part of France! I was on an outpost when somebody stepped on an anti personnel mine, and i lost my left foot, my upper teeth, the end of my right index finger, and had several other leaks in my anatomy! This happened near Mazieres-le-Metz. Made it home, and have no regrets. Have lived a full life, no sickness to speak of, and have found many friends in this column! France is a nice country! But, i never went back! No flying, or boats for me. Lawn tractors, motorcycles, cars and pickups give me all the excitement i need! Thanks for your interest: Rusty Jones

Way to go "Tough 'Ombre" The 90th was one heck of a unit from all the stories I have read. The Falaise Gap was "Hades on Earth" and a lot of the actions there are taught in officer schools.
