I found out why #1 cylinder had no exhaust smoke & that was because the #1 intake valve was staying open (valve train very slightly out of adjustment) Thats now fixed. Using a dial indicator I rechecked everything & even took off the idler gear & rotated the pump gear 180* incase the shaft was not put incorrectly at the shop during the rebuild & I didn't even get smoke out the exhausts so I rotated the pump back & after advancing & retarding the pump several times I got it to fire up just for a couple seconds which is all I could stand w/o the exhaust manifold on ITS LOUD!!! Its still really smoking alot just not as white. Should a new rebuild smoke alot until the rings seat? I guess I'm close then, right if I got it to fire? I had everything right the first time, I just didn't know about having to advance or retard the pump to get it to fire. Its a little on the retard side now. I found a little water from the oil pan oil which could have been from when the top of the head studs leaked which I later sealed w/ permatex so I thought the water was from that. It started yesterday w/ the radiator removed & block drained (since I had to check marks on gears on front of motor)& the day before it wouldn't start w/ radiator full so I wonder if I could have a small water leak in the cylinder & would this cause it not to fire? My head gasket got wet when I was tring to fix the head stud leaks. Next I'll put the radiator back on & fill it up so I guess I'll find out, but I was just curious.
Thanks for all the input,
Jim Maloney
