We used to use the sycronised or ground speed pto on M-F 178 tractors years ago for the powered axle on lime spreaders, it gave you 4 wheel drive. The other (not official) use for them was on the way home you got the tractor going as fast as you could in top gear, then slipped the pto in to engine speed, put the tractor gearbox in to 'silent 9th' and let the lime spreader axle do the work! Used to get us home quick!
