Synchronized PTO

My tractor has two settings for PTO: independent or sychronized. The sychronized runs directly with the transmission so that it is synchronized with the tractor's motion. So, if you stop and back up, the PTO reverses. I was just wondering what kind of implement that setting would be needed for? The only time I use the PTO is for bush hogging, and the synchronized setting is not too handy for that. I wish I had a two stage clutch.

We used to use the sycronised or ground speed pto on M-F 178 tractors years ago for the powered axle on lime spreaders, it gave you 4 wheel drive. The other (not official) use for them was on the way home you got the tractor going as fast as you could in top gear, then slipped the pto in to engine speed, put the tractor gearbox in to 'silent 9th' and let the lime spreader axle do the work! Used to get us home quick!

Could be used for any powered tool where tool speed is dependent on travel distance. Planters, like tree planters where there is a set distance between plantings come to mind. Might be useful for pto powered rotary fertilizer spreaders, etc.

The ground speed option is getting rare in newer machines, its used locally for running powered wood trailors for small scale operations,1 to 2 cord capacity, compared to a 4 or 6 cord porter, they can be less messy and user friendly with a loader mounted.

One common use of ground drive PTO is with hay rakes and tedders... Gene

Reversing the PTO would be handy on a combine or other implement that might plug up.

Use it in the indenpented mod. As far as the other way I could see how it would work with a manure spreader to be able to stop some place and push the stuff forward so you could move to another place with out looseing much if any of that sweet stuff
