Farmall100 is right on. Also it could be the breather vlave and even a headgasket. I bought a mower with a 16.5 hp briggs that was suppose to be blown. It turned out t be full of gas in the crank case. Drained it out and put new oil and added a shut-off and have been using it since. It is a common problem on Briggs.
