I Have a 15 H.P. Vertical Shaft Briggs OHV, On a Dixon Mower & If You Get On A Slight Grade, Muffler Side Up It Starts Putting Oil Into Air Filter From Crankcase After About 100 Feet And Realy Smokes When It Gets Into Carb. It Smooths When You Level It Out. No Its Not Got Too Much Oil In It, Have Had It For 4 Years, Not Very Many Hours, Just Started Doing This This Year? Has Always Had Maint. Kept Up On It But this Baffles Me. Have Never Done Any Major Work On These Type Briggs Engines. Thanks For Any Help You Can Give.

What color is the smoke Black or blue. that very important as Black smoke would be to much fuel and blue would be oil in gas. Check to see if it has a PCV valve that could be malfunctioning. Walt

Is the oil dip thread in? Some engines read oil level with the dipstick threaded in, others with the dip just resting on the top of the threads. Seen a few over and under filled engines over the years. If nothing else the smoke keeps the skeeters away.

Farmall100 is right on. Also it could be the breather vlave and even a headgasket. I bought a mower with a 16.5 hp briggs that was suppose to be blown. It turned out t be full of gas in the crank case. Drained it out and put new oil and added a shut-off and have been using it since. It is a common problem on Briggs.

I have been one to just pull the dipstick on a cold engine to check the oil. I have learned that on some of the small engines the cap which has the dipstick attached to it is airtight so you can get a false reading of oil level because of airlock. On those engines you need to remove and wipe off the dipstick and put it back in to make sure of proper measurement. This could be causing you to think the oil level is correct when it may not be.

Paul,

I always pull the dipstick twice. First time to wipe it off and second time to check the oil.

Not familiar with that engine but sounds like oil is collecting where the crank case is vented. maybe there's a blocked drain

I know you said you've checked the oil level, but I'm going to through this out for discussion anyway. Some B&S engines with gravity feed gas tanks will continue to drip gas thru the carb due to a sticky needle valve (I don't know if this is the correct terminolgy but bear with me) this happens when the engine is not running, the carb fills with gas and the gas overflows into the crankcase causing the oil level to increase and this mixture is sucked up and burned causing a smoke screen. I had this happen with a DR mower with 10hp B&S engine. the cure was to install a cutoff valve below the gas tank
