Just figured it out. Think in terms of engine being built for a mag. You can only get two shots per revalution from a mag, so it has to turn 3 times for a 6 cyl engine, For 2 turns of the engine. Meaning that the drive gear must run 1 and half time the cam speed. a distributor could have 3 lobes but not a mag.
