This is new to me after over 1/2 century of 2 and 4 cy tractors mostly. Last week worked on putting live pump on I H model H. with the pump on his mag was too long and to close to the oil filter. I had a right angel dist from a 6 cylinder something or other. The drive was fine but the dist part (6) cylinder part junk. I needed 4 cy anyhow so took another IH dist (horizintal type) removed gear on junk 6 cy dist, put it on the IH 4 cylinder. All fit nicely and turned freely. Installed on H ,set timing. It hit some backfired didnt run them hit twice backfired. Checked timing its way off. I thought the used pump must have a shered key of something. After a lot of thinking I remover the whole dist assembly put in vise on bench. Turns out when the drive is turned 2 rounds the distributer only turns 2/3 of a round. It takes 3 drive revolution to turn the dist one full round. What would this right angle 6 cylinder setup have been on to start with. I got it with other parts so don't know the original use. It had to have been from something with a different ratio on the dist drive from the cam. I was thinking possibly an oliver 70 as the dist could have been on one I hauled off, saved fenders ,weights, and single front wheel and sent the rest on a big boat to China!!!

Just figured it out. Think in terms of engine being built for a mag. You can only get two shots per revalution from a mag, so it has to turn 3 times for a 6 cyl engine, For 2 turns of the engine. Meaning that the drive gear must run 1 and half time the cam speed. a distributor could have 3 lobes but not a mag.

Good thinking however let me point out The ORIGINAL distributor i took out had 6 lobes Not a mag but a rusted junk dist. I took the gear off the 6 lobe dist and put it on a 4 lobe dist which was good There fore the gears have the same ratio of 1.5 to 1. Whatever the original use the 6 lobe dist (not a mag) turned 1.5 revolution each time the cross bar drive turned once. Your right if it was a mag but the junker is a 6 lobe dist. I still wonder if oliver or something has a different ratio ignition drive gear off the cam than the crank gear.???? Say to save space on the side of the motor the ignition drive was 2/3 of the crank gear Example 36 tooth crank gear and 24 tooth ignition gear still having a 72 tooth cam gear then this could work. It sure has me thinking!!!!! !!

You got it, Ken! 6-cylinder mags have to be "geared up" to turn 1.5 revs for each crankshaft revolution. (4-cycle engine, of course!)

Can't help, but bet most people will not read close enogh to understand what you are discribing. Reminds me of something in my past of a mag that ran a 7 cyl. radial.....

you are spinning your wreels! you cant make a 6 cyl. dist work on a 4 cylinder engine you need a distrbuter with a 4 lobe came in it then it must turn at cam shaft speed or 1/2 crank shaft speed.the only way to go. go back to square one
