I have been one to just pull the dipstick on a cold engine to check the oil. I have learned that on some of the small engines the cap which has the dipstick attached to it is airtight so you can get a false reading of oil level because of airlock. On those engines you need to remove and wipe off the dipstick and put it back in to make sure of proper measurement. This could be causing you to think the oil level is correct when it may not be.
