Hydraulics Cylinder's Question

Ex-farm boy here trying to learn how to disc again. I'm working with a Oliver tandem disc being pulling by Belarus 825. The lifting cylinder has been leaking down and at the end of yesterday, the area around the cylinder is covered in oil. Question #1: Did holding the control valve open to long blow the seals? Question #2: Which is better? Raising the wheels up until the wheels are off the ground or the letting the wheels float on the ground?
