Hydraulics Cylinder's Question

Ex-farm boy here trying to learn how to disc again. I'm working with a Oliver tandem disc being pulling by Belarus 825. The lifting cylinder has been leaking down and at the end of yesterday, the area around the cylinder is covered in oil.

Question #1: Did holding the control valve open to long blow the seals?

Question #2: Which is better? Raising the wheels up until the wheels are off the ground or the letting the wheels float on the ground?

Just to add 2 cents to the cylinder situation, yes seals are expensive, and are a design of "different" ideas, i found it easier and cheaper to replace the cylinder with a North Amercian designed unit as the russian cylinder still has standard mounting hole sizes anyway, just might need a JIC to pipe adapter/ angled maybe, and a short piece of hose if the connections are at either end and not one end, as orginal.

In my experience and through observation of other`s tractors I`d have to say that Belarus hydraulics are very leaky, I doubt that you`ve done anything to hurt the seals. You might just choose to live with topping off the hydraulic oil rather than doing a rebuild if the seals cost anything like other Belarus parts that I`ve priced.

Sounds like the cylinder need to be rebuilt or replaced. It shouldn't leak even if you hold the lever one way or the other to long. As far as the wheel you should lift them as far as they go unless you just want to light disk the area and not really cut in much

Thanks for the info. The tractor side of the hydraulics are okay. Just replaced the cylinder with another cylinder and also swap hoses.

Thanks

Don
