First I want to start with all the benefits you get from riding on a tractor and seeing the beautiful country side. Blane and I have done several tractor rides together. In fact this is how our marriage started. When Blane asked me to marry him and we started discussing our wedding he brought up the idea of getting married on the WMT tractorcade ride in Eastern Iowa. I figured what the heck. Our wedding was held at the Hawkeye Down's Fair grounds 5 years ago this coming June. We were married on a hayrack with our White 2-105 behind us and we were surrounded by tractors. After we were pronounced husband and wife everyone started their engines. Even the pastor who married us was on the ride. The following 3 days were spent riding on the tractor for approximately 180 miles. If it were not for this ride I would not have had the chance to meet as many people and make as many friends as we have. I have seen some gorgeous country. I think I even enjoy the ride more than Blane does. Scarry to say this but I look forward to this ride and anticipate the view I am going to get to enjoy. If I had it my way, I would drive the entire time and make Blane be the support driver. Even my 12 year old daughter Mackenzie now looks forward to the tractorcade and has asked for a buddy seat to be put on the tractor so she can ride with whoever is driving. To us it is like a reunion every year. You look forward to talking to people that you have met over the years. I think this makes you really appreciate what the county has to offer. It gives you a deep appreciation for the farmer out working in the field as you drive by. The families sitting in their front yard waving to you as you drive by, and seeing someone point at your tractor because it triggers memories. The worn down old wrinkled farmer who has a grin from ear to ear to see these tractors driving by. The kids running in the yard up toward the road hoping for the chance you are going to toss some candy to them. It's an ongoing parade that last for 180 miles. We don't worry about tire wear because Blane puts over 1000 miles on his tractor every year delivering grain to the river terminal.

You can really appreciate the beauty of this great country while riding on a tractor. You are able to go at a slower pace and enjoy! No 2 rides are the same. New people, new places, new adventures. The first time you decide to sign up for a ride you think I will do it and get it out of my system. Next thing you know you keep going back each year to sign up for the next ride. It is difficult how to explain the feelings you develop. It might sound hoaky to some, but you do grow a fondness for this. You feel a closeness to what you do as a farmer, or work in the agriculture field. It reinforces the bond you have for your identity. It reaffirms your identity, it defines who you are. I am not a farmer, but I do help Blane with the farming. It is a celebration of what we do for a living.

CHRISTINE

Today's Featured Article - The Nuts and Bolts of Fasteners - Part 2 - by Curtis Von Fange. In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
