I guess they are ok but seeing, or being a part of, a bunch tractors driving down the highway doesn't turn me on. We have enough PR problems around here with motorists and farm machinery on the road. Kinda like a tractor show where there is line after line of tractors with nothing hooked to them. A plow day, wheat cutting or combining, corn picking and such with all old equipment, now that I like. Not only more fun but shows the public what the tractors were for.

i have taken part in one tractor drive i think we went less than ten miles and had a picnic afterwards. everyone had a good time other than the guy who's tractor decided it was a good time to quit running.

First I want to start with all the benefits you get from riding on a tractor and seeing the beautiful country side. Blane and I have done several tractor rides together. In fact this is how our marriage started. When Blane asked me to marry him and we started discussing our wedding he brought up the idea of getting married on the WMT tractorcade ride in Eastern Iowa. I figured what the heck. Our wedding was held at the Hawkeye Down's Fair grounds 5 years ago this coming June. We were married on a hayrack with our White 2-105 behind us and we were surrounded by tractors. After we were pronounced husband and wife everyone started their engines. Even the pastor who married us was on the ride. The following 3 days were spent riding on the tractor for approximately 180 miles. If it were not for this ride I would not have had the chance to meet as many people and make as many friends as we have. I have seen some gorgeous country. I think I even enjoy the ride more than Blane does. Scarry to say this but I look forward to this ride and anticipate the view I am going to get to enjoy. If I had it my way, I would drive the entire time and make Blane be the support driver. Even my 12 year old daughter Mackenzie now looks forward to the tractorcade and has asked for a buddy seat to be put on the tractor so she can ride with whoever is driving. To us it is like a reunion every year. You look forward to talking to people that you have met over the years. I think this makes you really appreciate what the county has to offer. It gives you a deep appreciation for the farmer out working in the field as you drive by. The families sitting in their front yard waving to you as you drive by, and seeing someone point at your tractor because it triggers memories. The worn down old wrinkled farmer who has a grin from ear to ear to see these tractors driving by. The kids running in the yard up toward the road hoping for the chance you are going to toss some candy to them. It's an ongoing parade that last for 180 miles. We don't worry about tire wear because Blane puts over 1000 miles on his tractor every year delivering grain to the river terminal.

You can really appreciate the beauty of this great country while riding on a tractor. You are able to go at a slower pace and enjoy! No 2 rides are the same. New people, new places, new adventures. The first time you decide to sign up for a ride you think I will do it and get it out of my system. Next thing you know you keep going back each year to sign up for the next ride. It is difficult how to explain the feelings you develop. It might sound hoaky to some, but you do grow a fondness for this. You feel a closeness to what you do as a farmer, or work in the agriculture field. It reinforces the bond you have for your identity. It reaffirms your identity, it defines who you are. I am not a farmer, but I do help Blane with the farming. It is a celebration of what we do for a living.

CHRISTINE

The final tribute is very cool. When we buried my father in March a local farmer, in the same cemetary, had a JD 4020 etched on his headstone.Very nice tribute to him.

If all you get out of the tractor drive is to ride down the road I can see your point.

In reality, the good, most popular and filled to capacity drives are more than putting on miles on the road. As mentioned before some benefit charity. A lot tour some really scenic country, and others are held as part of a larger event.

I've never done one, but I look forward to my first some time in the future.

There are times where I'm fine with them, such as this. Can't see any better tribute for a guy who lived his life around tractors and made his living with them than to pay a final tribute with them...

A lot them are done a fundraisers for needy people. Like the Show-Me Drive, some here in TX also. Take your blinders off and look at the big picture; if we can do something with our antique tractors than brings joy to others then I believe it glorifies God. I know farmers bring joy into others lives with products they produce, so let us city farmers have our joy too. We will be careful not to come down your road and cause you any discomfort.

You make another great point. I would guess that the school and church groups that do the meals as fund raisers aren't so negative on our "Tractorcade" (that's actually the name of the one that I participate in).

I guess you're welcome to your opinion, but so am I. These are very popular, and the one I participate in is sold out with a waiting list every year. I guess I wasn't fortunate enough to have the opportunity to farm for a living, so I do a few things to enjoy the company of some who do. Interestingly enough, very few farmers who are on our ride have ANY negative opinion about us wannabe farmers who participate. The vast majority of participants on our ride are farmers. A few people on the road get a little impatient, but the majority honk and wave and seem to enjoy the show. The routes are well marked and communicated to the local communities well ahead of time so if you are concerned about a hold up, you can plan an alternate route. Safety is absolutely the utmost priority.

I respect your opinion, you can do with your tractor as you like. I grew up on a farm and in later years got interested in tractors and enjoy restoring them. I also enjoy the folks that I have developed a friendship with over the years and think that this is one of the biggest benifits of the hobby. I live in a ranching community and there aren't many opportunities
to participate in a field activity.

I did attend the Des Moines tractor drive last year. They had about 500 tractors participating.
I just went to observe and really enjoyed myself.

I have to admit that I do struggle with folks that are heavily opinionated.

Gotta agree. Kind of makes me think of protestors on TV. No way would I run my tractors for miles on road without a reason. They were made for slow speed in soft dirt.

I'll probably get blasted for saying this, but I alwys thought tractor rides were pretty weird. What fun is there in driving a tractor down the road for sometimes 50-100 miles and wearing out your tires. Just seems silly to me??? I use mine to work, and if I'm not using them for that they sit in the shed.

Allen that picture must be in downtown IHville. I don't see anything wrong with it myself, have never attended one, but I do ride around on mine from time to time just to exercise the old tractors I don't use much anymore.
