I have a 1999 Dodge 1500 4x4 myself. It's doing the same plus I can hear it "squeaking" until I put on the brake etc. If I put it in 4 wheel it'll "pop" if I turn hard left or right. I know it's my front axle u-joints. I've been putting it off for the last couple hundred miles as I haven't needed the 4 wheel and I'm driving it so infrequently. I've got one trip to make across town this weekend (about 100 miles r/t) and then I think I'll pull the axles and get to it. My truck has 130K. Your describing the same so no doubt like the other guys said yours are bad to. Get the greasable ones when you go to replace them.
