Brown oil may mean rust from water, although some hydraulic oil has a natural brown color. One trick to identify water in oil is to pull the dipstick and drop a bit of it on top of a hot exhaust manifold of a running and warmed up engine. Pure oil will just flow out and smoke, oil containing water will develope little steam bubbles in the oil, as the water boils on the hot manifold.
