Whatever you do, don't put hydraulic oil in your coffee, it'll give you the trots.

Yep, it are.

I use diesel fuel to clean 'em up. Fill 'er about 2/3 full and run 'er around the yard for 10 or 15 minutes.

Pull the plug(s), let it drain and drip overnight. New filter and oil and you're good to go for another season or two.

Brown oil may mean rust from water, although some hydraulic oil has a natural brown color. One trick to identify water in oil is to pull the dipstick and drop a bit of it on top of a hot exhaust manifold of a running and warmed up engine. Pure oil will just flow out and smoke, oil containing water will develope little steam bubbles in the oil, as the water boils on the hot manifold.

That sounds like a very smart trick, I'll have to give it a try.

Yes when I use old water laden Hydroi oil to burn brush it pops and crackles from the water in it, non water contaminated oil does not pop.

I have not tried that test, but it should work.

The same "hot manifold" test works if you suspect coolant in your engine oil. That hot manifold is well above the boiling point of a 50/50 water/antifreeze mixture, and you will see the same little steam bubbles in engine oil contaminated with antifreeze coolant.
