Based only on observation, it seems to me that farmers in the upper midwest use large equipment because, in addition to having large flat fields, they have a short amount of time to get a crop in when warm weather comes and a short amount of time to harvest the crop before cold weather arrives in the fall. Cold weather problems not limited to the North. Here in SC record breaking April cold has killed the fruit and nut crop. One dairyman near me had his silage corn up about 3 inches before the cold snap. Looks sick now, I'm curious to see if it will come back. My garden corn was planted just before the cold snap so I'm not worried about it--yet. KEH
