I was sleeping in yet this morning when I heard what sounded like thunder. Got up and looked out the window here it was this Steiger working this 80-acre field beside me.
As you can see mother nature dusted us with some snow overnight again. I couldn't see any mud on his tires but the ground was froze early this morning. Looks like it will be a sunny day here in lower Michigan but weather channel saying mixture of freezing rain and snow tomorrow. Been a few in this area ripping up ground some I think is too wet yet and other fields looked be ok. The farmer you see in the photo farms around 4500 to 5000 acres. Not to many of farmers in this area got much or any fall tilling done do to the heavy rains.
Only a few managed to get some wheat sowed last fall. I suppose some of the moister will freeze out as April looks like December weather yet. I hope it will warm back up soon, had enougth of old man winter for this year. Take Care, Mike

If you tried to go on the black clay ground in my area you would pay for that mistake the rest of the year.

Mike, it's been too wet in past years in Wright Twp. to get all the beans and corn in early enough to insure maximum yields so if you can get on the fields now and get some tillage done...go for it. Don't try to second guess this guy, he's been farming for many years. When the weather gets warmer, which it's supposed to, the guys wanna get the crop in pronto and any tillage done is a step in that direction.

Only plowing that is getting done up here (Northern NY) is snow plowing. No one is even thinking of going in the fields here.

That alarm clock would sound alot different then my new alarm clock, which has a built in snooze that goes off every 3-4 hours, but I guess that comes with being a first time daddy. Now if I can only figure out how to talk my dad into going in half on a "new" 1206 for his new grandson, anyone have any good sugggestions on that thought??? I think the 1206 would be a nice replacement/upgrade for dad's 190XT, that and a nicely redone 1206 open station would like nice in dad's fields here in the Mid-Michigan area.

My grandpa grew up right near you. If I remember right it was east of 127 on Lime Creek road. He told me that the one time he felt like a hero was when one of their milk cows took grand champion at the state fair. He moved to our part of Ohio during the depression.

I'm still waiting for thinks to dry out more before I even haul anymore manure here in mid Michigan. I'm sure glad I don't work anymore ground than I have to to feed the cattle.

rrlund, we"re neighbors - I"m near Edmore! I did get out and do some disking today. Spent a lot of time coaxing the hydraulics trying to keep the tractor above ground. Ground was pretty muddy, and I had tires balled up often. Needs to dry off quite a bit before I dare try to plow. when I broke down, and went in to town for repair parts, I noted Main farms was out with one of their 4wd tractors pulling a chisel plow, amd injecting fertilizer. they"re welcome to take a pass or two at my field, if they could find enough roon to turn the thing around!

Yep,them 'tater boys get a little anxious on some of that sandy ground. I've got some ground right on the west side of town that's best left until Memorial Day. Darned thing lays about the same level as Pearl Lake.

Based only on observation, it seems to me that farmers in the upper midwest use large equipment because, in addition to having large flat fields, they have a short amount of time to get a crop in when warm weather comes and a short amount of time to harvest the crop before cold weather arrives in the fall.

Cold weather problems not limited to the North. Here in SC record breaking April cold has killed the fruit and nut crop. One dairyman near me had his silage corn up about 3 inches before the cold snap. Looks sick now, I'm curious to see if it will come back. My garden corn was planted just before the cold snap so I'm not worried about it--yet.
