Sure it can work, and I've done it on field fires with some success. But if I was you, I would make the line 20 or 30 feet wide at a minimum. Wider is better and you can't just do it once and forget it either. It will have to be maintained for the entire fire season. A fire driven by wind can jump an 8 foot fireline in less time than you can say "Oh, sh.." Been there and seen it.
