Bob is 100% right the length of bar has nothing to do with your problem. I had a no 5 with a sevin foot bar that would mow with anybody's mower. I traded it a long time ago. The gaurds need to be adjusted properly and good sections on knive. I don't remember on the JD, but all my old McCormick mowers have to be in time to work well. They are timed at the head cutter bar attaches to. It is on a threaded pipe frame and rotated to achieve proper timing on them. I am almost sure the JD can be timed also. Some old JD guy's will know more about them.
