I am in the planning stage for working on my JD #5 mower. My 7' cutter bar was bent once then straightened . It isn't in the best of shape so I will need a new one. I was told that a 6' cutter bar will cut better than a 7' one, is this true? I figure, if it plugs less, I will have the same production without the trouble of unpluging it so much. Thanks!!

The guys are right, John. Adjustment and playing with the cutting angle are your troubles. When I get done haying the neighbors field with the #5 it looks like a golf course and I almost never have any plugging. Too much moisture down near the roots can also cause trouble. Cut in the afternoon.

Get the 7', every 6 times around the field, you've cut one complete trip around out. The guys are right, sharp knives adjusted right, and clean shiney guards. When I used to finish 1st cut, i'd "paint" on a light coat of oil on the mower, guards especially. Next time it was used, mow 10' in some weeds, it was clean, no rust. End of the year, same thing.

Bob is 100% right the length of bar has nothing to do with your problem. I had a no 5 with a sevin foot bar that would mow with anybody's mower. I traded it a long time ago. The gaurds need to be adjusted properly and good sections on knive. I don't remember on the JD, but all my old McCormick mowers have to be in time to work well. They are timed at the head cutter bar attaches to. It is on a threaded pipe frame and rotated to achieve proper timing on them. I am almost sure the JD can be timed also. Some old JD guy's will know more about them.

The cutterbar (no matter WHAT it's length) shouldn't plug excessively. (What the heck has cutterbar length got to do with plugging?)

The guards need to be in good shape (and being polished from use helps; too). The knife needs to be in good condition and "in register" and the fore and aft cutterbar tilt needs to be correct; as well as a few other things.

Another thing... if you are "reclaiming" a hayfield that has not been hayed for many years; there will be half-rotted "old growth" material that will plug the guards MUCH more often than mowing a field that has been regularly mowed and raked.

You can improve the performance of those old JD mowers 100% by replacing the short fat JD mower guards with New holland Moco guards, they are a bolt in fit, and those slim guards have only a fraction of the plugging problens of the original. In this area it's almost impossible to find a JD mower that have NOT been converted to NH guards.
