Spreading Fertilizer with old Tractor

Just finished 2 days of spreading fertilizer on 50 acres of hay with a 1965 Case 430. Had to stop twice with tractor problems. Yesterday I noticed my eyes burning from diesel exhaust fumes. While reloading spreader I noticed a small hole in bottom of muffler. Found a spare in the shop that would fit and bolted it on. Wasted 5 whole minutes. Today I noticed the temperature gauge running around 200 degrees. Pulled in the shop, removed the grill screens and found about 1/2 inch of dust and dirt built up from raking 6000 bales of hay last summer. Took the air hose, blew it off and was in the field again. Temp dropped back down to 150 and stayed there. I wasted another 5 minutes on this. When I got done, I checked fuel level and found I had used 2/3 of a tank of fuel in just 2 days. Why do people try to farm with these old machines anyway? However, I have figured out what to do. I can take that $3000 dollars I spent on fertilize and make a down payment on a new Massey or John Deere and do the same next year and use it to make an annual payment for the next 12 to fifteen years and a new tractor will be paid for. And, during all that time I won't be bothered with having to stop and fix all these break downs. But now that I think about it, this could create a problem also. If I don't fertilize, I won't have any hay. So what in the world would I do with that new tractor.
