Through the loop? Sounds like a current transformer. This might be normal. If you wire a CT bacwards it will read discharge. It is dependent upon the magnetic field of the wire for a reference. If the wire is put in backward, it will read backward. Does the battery discharge? Do the headlights work?

I hope this is as easy as it sounds.
