There seems to be memory gap of 20-40 years here. 2007 last time I checked, not the 1970/1980’s..
Most members seem to recall gasoline vehicles as having points, carburetors and a manual choke. And miss firing/wasting fuel on leaded gas fouled plugs. 2 or 3 speed automatics without lockup torque converters or overdrive. And without enough cooling capacity. Along with engine rebuilds required before 100,000 miles.
The same members recall diesels as having a simple mechanical injection pump and a couple of filters to replace. With diesel fuel costing 3/4 the price of gasoline.
Let’s fast forward to within the past 10-15 years.
Gasoline engines are fuel injected, burn unleaded fuel, have solid state ignitions with no moving parts, 100,000 plugs, increased HP/Torque and great fuel mileage. Automatic transmissions are equipped with large coolers, lockup torque converters, 4, 5 or 6 speeds and computer control of shift timing/overlap/firmness.
Diesels now are loaded even heavier with electrics than gassers. And have a 20,000psi fuel system that MR. Home Tinkerer dare not touch. Exhaust system soot collectors, egr ect. By the way diesel fuel costs 10-15% more than gasoline now.
How far and how long do you have to drive in order to just break even on the increased diesel fuel economy? Higher diesel maintenance costs and the inflated price of the diesel engine or diesel/manual trans option.
Manufactures can not make vehicles meet the emissions and fuel efficiency regs with "Joe Hero" shifting the gears himself.

The vehicle manufactures also went to automatics because they cost less in warranty returns. The US armed forces have speced automatics to reduce vehicle down time & expense.
