I wonder if he wrote you a check knowing it was bad in order to hold the tractor until he found the cash. I would hold it for as long as you said you would, but I would check his money very carefully to make sure its real. I would also make a receipt and have both parties sign it. Part of the receipt should also say the tractor is sold "as is" with no warranties.
